Lets Talk About Mudroom Clutter

A mudroom has the potential to be one of the hardest working rooms in your home—as opposed to simply serving as a pass-through to your garage or kitchen.

When it’s smartly organized, a mudroom makes it easier to get out the door in the morning. It also cuts down on errant shoes, hats and other clutter magically showing up elsewhere, rather than being put away.

Making the most of your mudroom—or even your entryway—isn’t difficult. Mix and match the following suggestions, depending on the amount of space you have, and you’ll be well on your way to a super-functional space.

Store the stuff

Shelving units, with open cubbies and closed storage drawers, are terrific for organizing and holding everyday and seasonal items. Baskets and bins that fit neatly on shelves are a good home for hats, gloves, mittens, sunscreen and sunglasses, while storage drawers are perfect for miscellaneous items.

Get personal

Personalization is another tool in your mudroom organizational arsenal. If space permits, consider designating individual shelves or drawers for each family member, so everyone knows where to find his or her things.

Install wall hooks

Utilize wall space for stylish hooks to hold coats, jackets, backpacks and dog leashes for easy grab and go.

Add a boot tray

A boot tray for wet or muddy footwear helps keep family members (or guests) from tracking water and dirt throughout your house.

Take a seat

A built-in bench with a cushioned top works well for putting on/taking off shoes. No room for a bench? A small folding stool serves the same purpose.

Create a message center

Hang a bulletin or magnetic dry-erase board to post notes, reminders and schedules.

Include an umbrella holder

Keep umbrellas at the ready so no one gets caught in stormy weather.
